1. Find something or someone to work for

We all tend to think of The Simpsons as a simple-minded show, but every once in a while a nice moment like this happens. Hopefully none of us have jobs that are so bad, but it’s still great to have a constant reminder of why you’re working.

2. Work somewhere that you enjoy
I don’t think this requires any sort of explanation. We may not all be working at our dream jobs, but it’s still good to work in a place that enjoy working in.

3. Always have goals/next steps/plan

[SPOILER ALERT] Mike always has a plan. When he started college it was to ace his classes, graduate with honours, and become the best scarer ever. Unfortunately that plan was ruined when he and Sulley were forever expelled from MU. But he had a goal and he wasn’t going to give it up just because he experienced a bump in the road. So he and Sulley set out to work in the mailroom and move up. And slowly but surely it all works out, they become the best scaring team ever. And that would have never happened if Mike didn’t stick with his goal.

4. Acquire a positive attitude
Right, this doesn’t require much explanation either. A positive attitude always improves a person’s work ethic. Maybe it’s not scientifically proven, but it works for me. Whenever I start to doubt myself or get discouraged, it definitely puts a damper on how I work.

5. Always separate home life and work like
This is definitely something that I see a lot of people struggle with. Lots of people take their work home, or work extremely late hours. Pretty much the only thing that these people will talk about is their jobs, and how much it sucks. If your job stinks, it’s important that you are able to distinguish work and home/personal life. Once your shift ends, you turn off that computer then clear your desk and go home and enjoy your friends, family, Netflix, pets, whatever it is as long as it isn’t work.

6. Create a beautiful/enjoyable work space
This may be my favourite. Something about buying new office supplies and table decorations that makes me want to do work.

I can never do homework on a desk that’s completely disheveled, it gets distracting. But when my desk is nice and orderly, it awakens a newfound love for homework.

7. Focus on one thing at a time
I’m pretty sure most people multitask. Listening to music while working or even watching TV may not be too bad. The multitasking that I’m talking about is taking on two or three additional projects. I tried doing that once. Handling two projects and studying for a test. It was the most brutal experience I’ve ever put myself through. Both projects were done with mediocre work and that test grade, if I remember correctly, was average. My point being, trying to complete more than one project at once will only end with mediocrity and underwhelming results. Only attempt an amount that you know you can handle without giving up the quality of the work.

8. Don’t be afraid to take breaks
Breaks are lovely. You can take a short walk or eat a little snack. There’s this process called the incubation effect that says if you take time away from a problem, you allow for your subconscious to solve the problem and (hopefully) get to a solution. If you force yourself to stare at something all day, it’ll eventually turn into a Jackson Pollock painting and will take way longer to resolve.

9. Challenge yourself and 10. Follow a Schedule
Challenges are not meant to make things terrifyingly difficult, they’re meant to make things difficult enough that you stay interested in your job. I’ve mashed up 9 and 10 because one healthy challenge is to follow a productive schedule. The point of the schedule is to keep you in track, if you stray from it slightly
